Queensland Trains - Luggage Policy


  • All passengers may have conveyed free of charge two items of luggage not exceeding 25 kilograms (55 pounds) each, plus one piece of hand luggage. 
  • Where check-in facilities are available, luggage must be presented at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
  • Once luggage is checked in, passengers will receive a unique ID tag. This tag will allow the retrieval of passenger's luggage once the train has arrived at the appropriate destination.
  • The liability for loss or damage is limited to $200.00 AUD
  • Unchecked luggage is carried at the owner's risk. Identification tags should be affixed to all items including hand luggage. Occupational Health and Safety Legislation provides guidelines outlining the safe weight that can be lifted by our staff. We appreciate your co-operation.      
The following prohibited articles may not be carried by the Passenger or placed in their luggage:
  • Substances and articles the Carriage of which is prohibited in any state or territory through which the luggage is carried;  
  • Things or items which cause damage or which are dangerous including (but without limitation) loaded firearms, explosives or inflammable substances or articles, oxidizing, toxic, radioactive, corrosive or repugnant substances or substances liable to cause infections;  
  • Live animals, insects, birds or fish;  
  • Articles which in the opinion of the Operator are unsuitable for Carriage because of their weight, size or character;  
  • Illegal narcotic substances other than prescribed drugs;  
  • Motorcycles.  
  • Plants. The carrier may refuse to carry any luggage which is not acceptable as luggage as provided by this clause.

New South Wales Trains - Luggage Policy

You can take three pieces of luggage per seat booked on board CountryLink services. That's one item of carry on luggage no more than 5kg in weight and no larger than 50 x 30 x 30cm (length x height x width) and two pieces that are either checked into the luggage compartment or stowed at the end of your carriage. 

Baby strollers, prams and capsules, along with golf clubs and collapsible wheelchairs are classed as carry on luggage.

In the interests of security unaccompanied luggage is not permitted on CountryLink services. We recommend you invest in travel insurance to cover your belongings during your journey.

Checked Luggage
You can check in two items, each weighing between 5kg and 20kg and not more than 70 x 60 x 50cm (length x height x width). Medium sized candy-striped bags will be accepted as checked luggage if they weigh 15kg or less and only contain clothing or soft items. Checked luggage must be lodged at the station 30 minutes before scheduled departure. Please note there is limited space for booked luggage and restrictions apply during peak periods.

Unchecked Luggage
If you do not wish to check your luggage you can take two items on board with you, as long as they don't weigh more than 20kg or measure more than 70 x 60 x 50cm (length x height x width). Please store these items in luggage racks or at the end of your carriage.

Items that are damaged, unable to be secured or with protruding contents will not be accepted. Liability is limited to $300 and private travel insurance is recommended. CountryLink has no liability for personal items including cameras, electrical goods, jewellery, money and tools; suitcases, bags, backpacks and similar items; bicycles, surfboards, snowboards and golf clubs; luggage that is not checked in and issued with a CountryLink luggage check.

Dangerous Items
For safety reasons, the items listed below must not be included in checked and carry-on luggage:
  • Compressed gases – flammable, non-inflammable and poisonous.
  • Corrosives – acids, alkalis, mercury and wet cell batteries.
  • Explosives – munitions, fireworks and flares.
  • Flammable liquids and solids – lighter fuel, matches, paints, thinners and fire-lighters.
  • Oxidising materials – bleaching powder and peroxides.
  • Poisons and infectious substances – insecticides, weed killers and live virus materials.
  • Firearms, spear guns, crossbows and knives.

What to pack for travel in Gold Kangaroo Service?
  • Smart casual attire is the dress code
  • Hair dryers are available on the Indian Pacific and The Ghan (small deposit required)
  • VISA, Mastercard and Bankcard only are accepted on the trains. No EFTPOS facilities available. Travellers Cheques are not accepted.
  • Pack a good book.
  • A jumper is recommended for the evenings as the air-conditioning can be cool. 
What to pack for travel in Red Kangaroo Service?
  • Neat casual attire is required
  • A jumper is recommended for the evenings as the air-conditioning can be cool.
  • Bring your own rug and pillow. Towels and soap are provided on the Indian Pacific and The Ghan (shower facilities not available on The Overland).
  • Hair dryers are available on the Indian Pacific and The Ghan (small deposit required)
  • VISA, Mastercard and Bankcard only are accepted on the trains. No EFTPOS facilities available. Travellers Cheques are not accepted. 
General Advice
It is recommended that guests pack a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes for off-train touring. Sensible shoes are also recommended for onboard the trains for walking between carriages. 

It is recommended to guests who bring electronic devices (eg. Laptop computer) to also pack a surge arrestor. 

Luggage
Due to space constraints, guests are recommended to only take on board hand luggage containing the requirements for their journey. A total of 40kg of checked-in luggage per guest is allowed (2 items not exceeding 20kg each and 180 linear centimetres). Note: checked-in luggage cannot be accessed during the journey. 

Cabin luggage is limited to the following amounts:
  • Gold Kangaroo Service twin: One travel bag not exceeding 20Kgs in weight and no larger than 70 x 60 x 50cm (length x height x width) plus one piece of hand luggage
  • Gold Kangaroo Service single: One travel bag not exceeding 20Kgs in weight and no larger than 50 x 30 x 30cm (length x height x width) plus one piece of hand luggage
  • Red Kangaroo Sleeper: One travel bag not exceeding 20Kgs in weight and no larger than 50 x 30 x 30cm (length x height x width) plus one piece of hand luggage
  • Red Kangaroo Daynighter seats : One travel bag not exceeding 20Kgs in weight and no larger than 50 x 30 x 30cm (length x height x width)

Certain items are prohibited from being carried in your luggage at all. Valuables including your passport, medicine, fragile or perishable items must be carried on board as cabin baggage. An additional fee may apply to excess luggage. Check the Conditions for full luggage details.

Western Australia Trains - Luggage Policy

Stowed Luggage
Stowed luggage is limited to luggage of a personal nature that would consist of a person’s clothing and other personal items such as:
  • Toiletries
  • Collapsible prams, pushers and baby carriers
  • Collapsible wheelchairs
  • Personal tool boxes (of a reasonable size)
  • Collapsible fishing rods
  • Sporting items (of a reasonable size)
  • Small electrical items packed in original packaging
  • Suitably packaged and sealed alcohol 
Luggage will only be accepted in bona fide packaging such as:
  • Suitcases
  • Overnight bags
  • Backpacks
  • Eskies (not to contain perishable food items)
  • Other substantial carry bags (sealed) 
Please Note: 
All items to be carried must be packed properly, sealed, be of a manageable size and shape. The weight allowance is 20kg per item (maximum 2 Items) with a total weight of 40kg. Where the physical attributes of a Transwa staff member makes lifting and handling of such items difficult, the passenger will be obliged to render the staff member assistance. 

Carry on Luggage
Hand held carry on luggage (maximum of one (1) item with a weight not exceeding 7kg) may include camera cases, video bags, lap top computers and items of similar size (must be able to fit into the overhead storage compartment). 

Carriage of Bicycles and Surfboards
Bicycles and surfboards will be carried on all services (excluding the Prospector) if space permits. Both will incur a fee.
  • Bicycles – to fit storage compartment. It is recommended bicycles be pre-booked as space is limited.
  • Surfboards and body boards - items must be suitably packaged 
Special Luggage
The carriage of some items will require special permission from Transwa management. These items MUST be pre-booked and will incur a fee per item. For more information on these restrictions see prohibited luggage items, if you have any questions or are unsure about a particular items please contact us on 1300 662 205. 

Prohibited Luggage 
For the comfort and safety of all passengers the following items will not be accepted as luggage on Transwa services under any circumstances.

All services
  • Personal Alcohol is prohibited from being consumed on board any service.
  • Perishable goods
  • Flora and fauna - no live plants, livestock or pets (other than guide dogs). Flower arrangements can only be carried as personal carry on luggage
  • Dangerous goods – any fuels, oils, solvents , ammunition, acids, radioactive material or chemicals or explosives
  • Windsurfing boards, surf-skis and kayaks
  • All gas cylinders including diving tanks (this does not include medical oxygen for personal on board use)
  • Large electrical items
  • Small machinery - no fuels or oils 
Prospector only
  • Bicycles, surfboards and body boards
